CBD for Alzheimer’s Disease

CBD for Alzheimer’s Disease – Results Are Promising!

Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of dementia-related condition. According to the CDC, the reported that the neurodegenerative disorder, unfortunately, affects as many as 5.8 million Americans. The disease affects a person’s memory, language, thoughts, and ability to carry out daily activities, which dramatically impacts not only their lives but the lives of their friends and family. The CDC also anticipates that the number of people with Alzheimer’s will triple by the year 2060 – a truly frightening statistic. Despite tremendous research, what causes Alzheimer’s disease is still unknown, and there is currently no cure for it. But, there is some speculation that a healthy lifestyle and diet may be able to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease. In recent years researchers have been studying the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and how it impacts Alzheimer’s Disease and using CBD for Alzheimer’s disease – and the results are promising.

What the Research Says About CBD for Alzheimer’s Disease

CBD has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Using CBD may provide neuroprotective benefits that may be able to delay or prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease and may also be able to treat and manage some symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease, such as agitation, sleep disturbances, and lost inhibition. Science Daily shared recent promising research into how CBD may be a valuable tool in preventing, delaying, and treating Alzheimer’s Disease, “A two-week course of high doses of CBD helps restore the function of two proteins key to reducing the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaque, a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and improves cognition in an experimental model of early-onset familial Alzheimer’s, investigators report…The proteins TREM2 and IL-33 are important to the ability of the brain’s immune cells to consume dead cells and other debris like the beta-amyloid plaque that piles up in patients’ brains, and levels of both are decreased in Alzheimer’s. The investigators report for the first time that CBD normalizes levels and function, improving cognition as it also reduces levels of the immune protein IL-6, which is associated with the high inflammation levels found in Alzheimer’s, says Dr. Babak Baban…They found CBD appears to normalize levels of IL-33, a protein whose highest expression in humans is normally in the brain, where it helps sound the alarm that there is an invader like the beta-amyloid accumulation. There is emerging evidence of its role as a regulatory protein, whose function of either turning up or down the immune response depends on the environment, Baban says. In Alzheimer’s, that includes turning down inflammation and trying to restore balance to the immune system, he says.”

Considerations in Using CBD for Alzheimer’s Disease

Considerations in Using CBD for Alzheimer’s Disease

Research in the area of CBD for Alzheimer’s disease is still relatively new and limited. More research is needed (and there are clinical trials and research currently underway) to determine what CBD plays in preventing and treating Alzheimer’s Disease, but preliminary results are very promising. Optimal doses and means of consumption also need to be determined through research, but initial studies are looking into higher doses and concentrations of CBD to treat Alzheimer’s Disease. In addition, CBD has very few side effects or risks, so it may be worth discussing with a physician whether you or someone you know could benefit from implementing CBD in their health and wellness regimen as either a preventive measure or to ease the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease.
