CBD for Better Sleep

Sleep (1024 × 400 px)

Thanks to numerous studies and research, we now know that sleep is a critical component of general health and wellness. It is important to not only get enough sleep but to get enough quality sleep. The amount and quality of your sleep directly impact many aspects of your health; as the Department of Homeland Security explains, ”It plays an important role in memory, mood, judgment, reflexes, decision-making and your ability to learn new things. It also affects your performance at work and your ability to do everyday tasks like driving. In addition, lack of sleep has been linked to an increased risk for various health problems, including obesity, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, damage to your immune system, and depression.” The unfortunate reality is that most people are not getting enough sleep or not getting enough high-quality sleep to maximize their health. While many prescriptions are available to help you sleep, they come with many side effects and may be addictive. Fortunately, CBD is an all-natural option with no side effects, non-addictive, non-psychoactive, and non-habit forming. CBD use is showing positive results for many people looking to improve the quality & duration of their sleep.

It is first important to clarify that CBD does not contain the psychoactive components of THC that are associated with marijuana use – it will not get you ‘high.’ CBD uses its naturally occurring cannabinoid properties to work within our body’s Endocannabinoid System. Research indicates that the ECS regulates our physiological & cognitive processes like Mood, Energy, Stress Response, Focus, Memory, and Sleep and mediates the positive effect of CBD (cannabinoids).  The specific sleep problems you may be dealing with will influence whether CBD improves your sleep duration and quality, but many people see positive results – which is supported by research!

As aforementioned, the means and methods by which CBD may improve your sleep will depend on what is causing your sleep problems, but it may be able to help in a variety of ways. The Sleep Foundation points out that there is promising research. CBD research is still relatively in its infancy to support CBD in treating insomnia, anxiety, stress, and racing thoughts that impact your sleep, REM sleep behavior disorder, excessive daytime sleepiness, and more. If you are experiencing a sleep disorder or are concerned that you are not getting enough high-quality sleep, speak to your doctor to discuss what may be causing your sleep problems and explore CBD as an all-natural option that may be able to help improve the quality & quantity of your sleep.
